Jonathan H. Newman – 91/100
"This wine captures the essence of why the hillsides in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma are best known for high quality Zinfandels and this one has a spectacular QPR. A little Petite Sirah. aromas of blackberries, cherries, and plums open into an alluring full to medium bodied and silky textured Zinfandel. On the palate, bursting with fresh jammy berries, ripe raspberry and blackberry fruit, and spice with well integrated vanilla oak and vibrant acidity. It is a well crafted wine that is ready to enjoy now and will drink well over the next several years."
Dry Creek Valley is to Zin what Napa Valley is to Cabernet. It's where Zin shows its ripest and most complex self, particularly fruit from the old vines found here.
Dry Creek Valley Zin of this caliber ordinarily sells for $30 or more. Don't miss it.
This is everything that you want in an old vines Zinfandel from California’s famed Dry Creek Valley. The 2007 Castlebank Old Vines Zinfandel is made by our family-owned winery that has been making small production, hand-picked wines in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley for generations.
We hand-picked the grapes for our 2007 Old Vines Zinfandel in the first two weeks of September – the optimal time for harvesting fruit, just before over-ripening occurs. The lots are then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. Our cellar crew performs three pumpovers per day! This process extracts the deep color and full flavor from the skins. After fermentation, we age our Zinfandel in a blend of seasoned American oak and new French oak barrels for 11 months. The result is a beautiful red wine that is full to medium bodied, offering a balance of fruit, spice and tannin combined with a long, lush finish. Gorgeous ripe blackberries and jam-like fruit flavors, combined with spice, a hint of black pepper and the well-integrated essence of vanilla oak make for a deliciously concentrated wine.
Our Zinfandel vineyards are nestled on the hillsides of the Dry Creek Valley in northern Sonoma County. A portion of our vines were planted around the turn of the twentieth century, and the rest are between 25-40 years old. The richest, most intense Zinfandel comes from head-pruned, dry-farm vines, like ours.
Castlebank’s 2007 Old Vines Zinfandel is a hearty red wine that will pair perfectly with barbecue, steaks, poultry and pork. It should be served at around 65 degrees in a narrow-mouthed glass. This is a wine that may be enjoyed now, or stored in your cellar for three more years
