Wine Advocate 90 Points
The 2015 Malbec Estate is floral and aromatic, all about violets and blueberries, very much in line with the 2013, which offered great freshness and poise. It's not terribly complex, but it's extremely pleasant and balanced.

2013 Vintage

This is a refined and savory malbec with iron, white pepper, spices and dark fruit character. Full body and chewy yet fine tannins. Delicious and refined finish. Drink or hold.

The first red I tasted was the 2013 Malbec Estate, a floral and aromatic wine that is all about violets and blueberries and offers great freshness and poise. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture and fine tannins. The label says Valle de Uco, but the technical data tells me the grapes come from Gualtallary, the higher part of Tupungato, where they have planted no less than 135 hectares of vineyards. This is a delicious, mineral Malbec that over delivers. It has great freshness and acidity and it tastes like a higher end wine from many wineries. At this price it is a steal! And widely available, as 500,000 bottles were produced.

Doña Paula belongs to Viña Santa Rita from Chile. There's been a change in the winemaker here, the wines are now in the charge of Marcos Fernández who was previously with Decero, as David Bonomi has returned to Norton.

2012 Vintage

A gorgeous and rich red with lots of finesse. It shows aromas of ripe fruit, terra-cotta, fig and hints of tar. Full-bodied, yet reserved with a very long and intense finish. A beautiful and refined wine.

Tasting Panel 90 Points

"Blue flowers light up this brilliant white-peppered red. Mouth-watering raspberry and high acid spell "tart" and "fruit" - grown in high altitude vineyards. Mocha and cherry spread luxuriously across the mouth. A great barbeque wine."

2009 Vintage

Wine Advocate 91 Points
"This has a pinched bouquet that takes some coaxing, but there are some lithe cassis and black plum fruits with a touch of garrigues developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, fleshy entry, good acidity, lush raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of vanilla, very well defined on the finish with good length. EXCELLENT. Drink now-2014.

Wine Spectator 90 Points
"Ripe and flashy, but pulls it off, with gorgeous mouthfeel and loads of lush raspberry ganache, boysenberry and plum sauce notes, all kept going by a graphite streak on the lengthy finish. Drink now."

2008 Vintage

"Expressive nose of Asian spices, lavender, black and blue fruits, plum; ripe, sweetly-fruited."

2007 Vintage
Wine Spectator 90 Points
"Dark and winey, with warm currant paste, cocoa powder and Turkish coffee notes backed by solid grip on the fleshy finish. Nice hint of grilled sage adds dimension too. Drink now through 2009"

Wine Advocate 90 Points
The opaque purple 2007 Malbec reveals a brooding black fruit bouquet, ripe flavors, excellent depth and grip, and 2-3 years of aging potential. Drink this outstanding value from 2010 to 2018. Dona Paula was founded in 1997 and the first vintage was 1999. Forty percent of their production goes to the USA market. During my visit to the winery, I was impressed by the spirit of experimentation and willingness to try new and different approaches.

Vineyards
From our best vineyards in Altamira (at 1,150 meters [almost 3,773 ft] above sea level) and Gualtallary (at 1,350 meters [almost 4,430 ft] above sea level), Doña Paula Estate Malbec displays the unique characteristics of the Uco Valley, a terroir with cold climate, mineral and rocky soils. The trellis system used is espalier and the grapevines are head trained. The average yield is 8 t/ha (approximately 3.24 t/acre). Drip irrigation is used. At Doña Paula, our vineyards have always been managed using sustainable agriculture practices.

Vinification
Manual harvest takes place in the first week of April. Destemming is gentle, without breaking the grains. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is carried out, following Doña Paula’s style, to preserve primary aromas. Then, fermentation at low temperatures and a short post-fermentation maceration are performed. The wine is aged in first, second, and third-use French oak barriques for 10 months.
