Wine Advocate 93 Points
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 40th Anniversary is a blend of 17 vineyards, with the dominant part from the Rutherford Estate. The final blend was 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Malbec and Petit Syrah. This was aged 19 months in about 30% new French oak and bottled unfiltered. A real beauty, and, for a top Napa Cabernet, an excellent price point. The wine has a dense bluish purple color, a sweet kiss of crème de cassis, licorice, camphor and subtle toast. Relatively opulent on the attack and midpalate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with silky tannin, adequate acidity and impressive purity and length. It is definitely worth taking a serious look at.

One of the iconic pioneers and historic producers in Napa, this estate was founded by the Raymond family in Rutherford in 1970, although they have been in Napa since the early 1930s. Today, the property is under the ownership of Frenchman and Burgundian, Jean-Charles Boisset, who has committed all of their vineyards (comprising more than 300 acres) to organic, or biodynamic, farming. The quality of the wines has soared under Boisset’s helmsmanship. Much to his credit, Raymond Vineyards has returned to the fold as one of the benchmark, classic estates in all of Napa.

Tasting Notes
The 40th anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon pays homage to the Raymond family’s fivegeneration commitment to crafting distinguished Napa Valley wines, which have earned an enduring reputation for their beautiful balance and expression of terroir.

The wine was aged for 19 months in 100% French oak, of which 30% was new French oak. The wine was bottled unfiltered, contributing greater texture and presence to the mid palate. It has aromas of cherry, candied violet and red fruits with a touch of sandalwood and maple. Flavors include black currant and cocoa nibs. Enveloping on the palate, this wine is juicy with melting tannins and a kiss of minerality on the finish.

Winemaker Notes
The 2014 Raymond Reserve Selection 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon is a special vintage indeed.  As mentioned, it is decked out in red velvet, as if it just walked out of Raymond's Red Room. The Red Room is the name of Raymond's tasting room, which is also lined in red velvet-a must see for anyone visiting Napa. There is also Raymond's Red Room Salon Privé, for those wanting luxurious private tastings.

The Reserve Selection 40th Anniversary Cab is crafted with hand-sorted grapes from the vineyards in Rutherford and St. Helena "to preserve the bright fruit flavors and rich earthy characters of the fruit." It is a rich blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Petit Sirah and Malbec that spent 19 months in French oak (30% new). "The wine was bottled unfiltered, contributing greater texture and presence to the mid palate." Our 2014 Napa Valley Reserve Selection 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon opens with fresh aromas of cherry, candied violet and red fruits with a touch of sandalwood and maple. Flavors of black currant and cocoa nibs come to the entry. Enveloping on the palate, this wine is juicy with melting tannins and a kiss of minerality on the finish. Enjoy this wine over the next 5-9 years.

The Winery
For generations, Raymond Vineyards has been an integral part of the Napa Valley, with now five generations of viticultural and winemaking expertise. Our new winemaking team captures the essence of the past while infusing the energy of the future and the vibrancy of the next generation into each and every wine. “It is important to retain the core foundation that made this brand legendary in Napa Valley, while keeping the style fresh and relevant to today’s wine drinkers” says Stephanie Putnam.

In addition to our top-notch winemakers and viticulturalists, Raymond has also tapped into a world-renowned winemaker, Phillipe Melka, to assist on our high-end Cabernets and complement the inherent strengths of the team.

As for a specific style, the team aims for the three B’s – Big, Bold, Balanced – yet with refinement and elegance. This philosophy lends itself well to the underlying principal of terroir that dates back thousands of years where the interrelationship between soil, climate, and plant are enhanced by the passion of people to convey an authentic sense of place. Our winemaking team allows the purest expression of the fruit to reign, with aromas and flavors that fill your glass and your palate with wines that are unmistakably powerful, intriguingly complex, and beautifully integrated.
